587 Memorial

Situ Studio Situ Studio

A project realized by Situ Studio in collaboration with the artist Freddy Rodriguez.

The Memorial is a place of contemplation and memorial dedicated to victims of the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 November 12, 2001. The flight was in route from Queens, New York to Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic and crashed shortly after takeoff from JFK Airport. This is the second major tragedy in U.S. aviation history.

Facing the ocean beyond a wall of granite arch is located high atop a pedestal surrounded by a small wood planters nine pears. The vegetation acts as a screen and separates visitors from passers-by. The number of empty holes on the wall to bow have a dual function: frame the ocean and the blue of the sky and provide a space to leave flowers and tributes to loved ones. The names of each of the 265 victims are inscribed on the surface at different heights while the only input the wall cut in its center.

Exactly at 9:12 of each year, in occasion to the anniversary of the accident, the sunlight shines through the threshold and aligns perfectly with the pattern made by the flooring.

A major challenge of this project was to succeed in creating an area of peace and serenity dedicated to contemplation in the busy center of Rockaway.
